Godalming Wharf - River bend by Sainsbury's by Annabel Gibbs

some brown, muddy-looking water entering river from drainage pipes that run under road. Source unknown - may be run off following the heavy rain?

    East Lagoon by Trevor Murrells

The water was lowered in the East Lagoon about a month ago to allow for the cutting back of willow, and water was allowed to re-enter the East lagoon eight days ago via the neighbouring lagoon to the west. The water was clear but the sample included some debris, water depth was about six inches, and the bottom was easily disturbed.

From Godalming Treatment Works by Trevor Murrells

Lots of foam, mostly away from the inlet. Looked oily on the surface near the inlet.

Unstead Exit (outflow) by Trevor Murrells

There was a good flow of water over the dam in front of the red brick tower (exit point). The red brick tower now has a pitched roof (built by Stuart & UWCG volunteers) , covered with roofing felt, to provide a home for bats. The sample is now (from today) being taken a couple of feet away from the previous location, between the dam and exit tower, where the water collects before leaving the reserve. There are some pond plants where the water collects but it is not particularly congested. About a month ago the water level in the East Lagoon was lowered to allow for the cutting back of willow. Water was allowed to re-enter the East Lagoon eight days ago. This might have impacted on today's tests.

Outlet into Pond Wood by Trevor Murrells

The water is clear around the inlet but much of the pond is covered with duckweed which grows on slow flowing water. The water flow, colour, clarity & odour relate to the outlet, the water level relates to the pond.

Outflow from GSTW into Wey Natural River: Trunley Heath Road by Trevor Murrells

Note at this location I attempt sample from the pipe/where the pipe water meets the surface of the river. Water level, colour & clarity refer to the river rather than what is flowing out of the pipe. The water level was higher than average but not breaching the river bank. There was a steady to strong flow from the pipe.

Natural Wey River at Unstead close to bridge (Northside) by Trevor Murrells

There was a heavy downpour before testing. The river was flowing quicker and was higher than it has been during recent testing. There is a tree leaning into the river. There are now cattle in the field on west side of the natural river.

Polsted Lane/Withies Lane stream by Trevor Murrells

Steady to fast flow (compared to the summer), sand at bottom of main channel, silt accumulated to the side of the stream bank (always there), there are a few logs (downstream from the sampling point) obstructing the exit point into the ditch

Peperharrow swimming spot, by fish bypass by Rachel Hargreaves

  • 25 September 2023

Landings Wood Stream by David M Jones

    Clarity slightly milky from turbulence.

  • 24 September 2023

Farncombe boat house by Nicola Avery

Damselfly nearby. An angler mentioned dace, carp, pike in River Wey and chub, barbel in Hells Ditch regularly

  • 24 September 2023

Ock at Bargate Wood by Chris Ball

Clear in the main no odour slightly brown water / opaque at deeper part

  • 24 September 2023

Polsted Lane/Withies Lane stream by Trevor Murrells

Steady flow, faster than in the summer, some silt but mostly sand is visible at the bottom of the stream. The water is flowing onward down to the ditch in the field rather than into the pipe that leads to the (dried) pond near The Withies Pub.

    East Lagoon by Trevor Murrells

The lagoon has been partially drained, on a temporary basis, by the warden to allow for further cutting back of the willow so today's sample was taken close to where the bulk of willow is growing and not a few metres in from the natural shoreline. Both the nitrate and phosphate tests were virtually clear hence I have given them values representing the mid-point between 0.0 and 0.2 (i.e.. 0.1), and 0.00 and 0.02 (i.e. 0.01) respectively.

From Godalming Treatment Works by Trevor Murrells

Water was flowing in from the sewerage treatment works so an assessment of clarity and water colour was not made (too much churning). There were some bubbles on the surface of the water probably caused by the flow into the culvert.

Unstead Exit (outflow) by Trevor Murrells

Where the sample was taken the water was fairly still but close by the outflow from the reserve was steady. There are plenty of pond plants both above and below the surface of the water but not too many around the sampling point.
