Root River Old Garden River by Community Volunteers

The water was low for a high rainfall within 24 hours. The water must move faster through the watershed than 24hrs. Will attempt to catch rainfall within 8 hours of next rainfall event. There were Northern clearwater crayfish(Faxonius propinquus) and juvenile sculpins(not sure of species) Lots of foam present that was making its way through the system potentially. Long grass, be careful walking down the riprap, the rocks can be unstable and balance can easily be lost.

  • 30 July 2024

Root River Hwy 17E by Community Volunteers

The water was more than cloudy almost opaque. There were fish present as I watched a large one jump for bugs. There were 6 ripples - it was big. There were many minnows visiting me as I was in the water. They liked my toes and the conductivity meter. There is a lot of cowsparnip in the path and by the river. This can be toxic to human skin and can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin. Four snails with broken shells, I did not step on. The vegetation is overgrown and is covering the path. Be careful of stinging needles and wildlife in the forest. Make noise before approaching the river to ensure that wildlife in the area hears you.

  • 28 July 2024

Root River Branch Fourth Line E by Community Volunteers

This visit was a special visit to determine if fish were present and trapped. 4 separate fish were seen. One was caught and resembles a salmon - possibly chinook or coho. The culvert does not allow for passage further up stream. The fish was approx. 7.8cm in length. To note the water was turned up a reasonable amount before sampling. If conductivity is higher than previously, the iron turn-up could account for this. Take the path down to the site. Wear a vizy vest so visible to neighbours. the path is steep and watch for slippery rocks and grasses. There is an abundance of iron seeping from the ground, the ground is saturated so can easily sink. Wear long boots and pants.
