Organisations own the data they collect, and we publish it openly so it can be used. These guides cover getting that data out of the platform, whether that means a one-off download or a running integration.
Which guide you need
Data sharing and API how-to explains how the platform is organised, what each record holds, and how the licensing works. Start here if you are new to Water Rangers data, or if you want to understand how organisations, datasets, locations, observations and readings fit together before you write any code.
API endpoints documentation is the technical reference: authentication, rate limits, pagination, errors, the available endpoints and what each response contains. Use it once you know what you are looking for.
Webhooks covers having us notify your service when data changes, rather than your service asking us repeatedly. If you are polling on a timer today, this will reduce both your request volume and the delay before you see new data.
If you only need the data once
You do not need an API key to download a dataset. Every dataset page has a download link, and the file is released under the Open Data Commons Attribution Licence. For a one-off analysis that is usually the quickest route.
Getting access
API keys are issued on request so we can attribute usage and keep the service responsive. We are a small non-profit and the API runs on donated infrastructure, so if you plan to use it regularly, please consider contributing to our server costs. The how-to guide explains how to apply.
