Rock Run Creek by Andy Neill

One of two photos uploaded is the busy street entrance to the Rock Run Creek Preserve of Will County at Essington and Ingalls Roads. The storm sewers that drain these roadways enter the Rock Run Creek just to the west.

    Ron Haimbaugh by Ron Haimbaugh

Chloride was off the scale so I recorded the highest PPM on the scale. Sorry that I did not write down the quantab units on the post it note. Oops

North Branch Chicago River at Edgebrook Woods by Alan Matson

The North Branch is still 99+% frozen but the small rippling area where I sample is a little bigger. Ice seems thinner, surface snow is melting. Only about half inch of snow since last measurement. No salt left in nearby streets. Surprised chloride level went up so much.

    Marvis Park by Nelson Igwilo

The second test strip also had a reading of 5.6 quantab units (299ppm)

  • 8 February 2026

    More trash in the stream.

  • 8 February 2026

East Branch DuPage River at Churchill Woods by Beth Peluse

  • 8 February 2026

Bayou Path Dr Stream in Atwater Subdivision by Lisa Hjorth

Although ice covered the pond at the inflow (yellow strainers) the sound of flowing was water was detected. There were several areas at the outflow / testing where no ice was present which allowed a water sample to be safely obtained. The footprints on the ice were there before I arrived and appeared to be both animal (likely coyote) and human.

Timber Ridge Forest Preserve by Andy Culbertson

Photos: 1. A great blue heron flying north over the creek. You can clearly see its reflection and see the bird itself with close inspection. It was under the bridge or next to it, and I startled it when I walked by. 2. Wide-angle shot of the creek with ice around the mouths of the streams that feed into the creek. 3. Ice over the small waterfall at the end of the bridge. That was inconvenient for sampling, so I took my sample from the middle of the creek instead. 4. The test card. 5. Close-up of the test strip. The snow still mostly covered the path but was down to an inch or less, depending on how packed it was by travel. The bridge had large patches of ice under the snow. The trail was getting less use than at other times, but I saw horseshoe prints in the snow, and a jogger and a cyclist passed me on the bridge. A walker asked if I was fishing, so I told him about the program. We chatted a while, and he turned out to be the chairman of the Friends of the Great Western Trail and gave me a flyer for their annual trail cleanup day.

  • 7 February 2026

  • 7 February 2026

Evans Field - Des Plaines River -Trail Marker 215 by Serena Pesch

This test was taken 400 ft south of the normal testing spot due to the river being frozen over.

Regular sampling point north side of foot bridge frozen across the stream bed (see photo). Sampled just south of foot bridge a bit downstream in an open area (second photo).
