R.K. McMillan Park by Korice Moir

So hot in Mississauga! Beautiful day. Everyone is trying to cooling off. Physically distant, of course. Thank goodness for summer.

  • 15 May 2021

    Mississauga by Korice Moir

Two turtles and 20+ singing toads (thinking they're not frogs because of their bumps!) at a new testing site on southwest shoreline by bridge at the mouth of the creek. Green heron spotted further upstream. It swallowed a fish whole! (That's the blurry zoomed in picture, it was just too far away for phone to pick up.) Grackle nest in tree on southwest shore across from the turtles and toads, didn't get a photo of that. Common merganser (looks like a white-breasted loon) was swimming amongst mallards at the mouth of the creek opening up onto the lake. Scared mink (no pic of that) while walking path further south along eastern shore of peninsula into Lake Ontario toward Lakeside Promenade Park. Swan nest with eggs spotted along the lake.

Mouth of the Humber (East side) by Korice Moir

Water level of Lake Ontario/Humber Bay very low right now. Low enough to be able to walk out into Lake Ontario from the beach to the wall protecting the shoreline from erosion. People were sitting on that wall. Never seen that before.

Mouth of creek just north of boat launch by Korice Moir

Was it a dog? Or a coyote? Howling coming from bushes on other (east) side of creek. Three long howls. Looked and looked but could not see. Coyotes have been in the Humber Bay East area in previous years so possible. Will keep an eye out. Also noted water level extremely low at the mouth of Mimico Creek (and Lake Ontario). What’s up with the conductivity? Super high?!?

  • 22 March 2021

    Sunnyside Beach by Korice Moir

Spring is here! First time out monitoring in 2021. Today is World Water Day, reflecting on the value of water. Gorgeous day to be out along Toronto's waterfront. Warm sunshine! Shimmering water. A few ducks fluttering around, but otherwise clear. Dear Lake Ontario, you're particularly beautiful today.
