Bayou Path Dr Stream in Atwater Subdivision by Lisa Hjorth

The inflow (west) has strainers that were obstructed with mud and sticks, possibly caused by a muskrat or other critter. Some water was able to flow through to where I drew the water sample on the east (outflow).

Bayou Path Dr Stream in Atwater Subdivision by Lisa Hjorth

Using the sample of water for my November 2024 observation, I placed an unused test strip from last season's testing cycle (Lot #A3285A) in the sample and compared the results to the current test strip for this season's testing cycle (Lot #4272A). Both strips produced the same result of 65 PPM. This exercise provides some confidence in the accuracy between Lots of test strips and between sets of observations for last season and this season.

    Ron Haimbaugh by Ron Haimbaugh

I routinely test for fertilizer runoff at this site but have yet to find any. I suspect the kits I am using are not sensitive enough. I have been testing for Nitrate, Nitride, Ammonia, and Phosphate. The Phosphate kit I have is supposed to be a pretty good one (Chemets) and is much more than test strips. I am even filtering the water but the results always come back clear, or green. Clear would indicate no phosphates. If phosphates were present the results should be a shade of blue. I also tested in Iowa and had the same results - inconclusive. Next season I may test for dissolved oxygen and probably other things.

Jon Duerr Forest Preserve Fox River by Julie Chadwick

It’s a beautiful sunny day; the river is moving at a moderate pace. On the hike here I saw an eagle flying along the river and landing somewhere across the river from my observation site.
