Marie Curtis Park Beach, Etobicoke by Korice Moir

Tried to test at end of eastern pier but didn't have long enough with selfie stick, so opted for spot along shoreline of Lake Ontario, just east of pier on Etobicoke side of Marie Curtis Park (East). Dried algae on rocks. No smell today. Lots of debris and garbage near the pier, including 20-30 golf balls (golf courses upstream along Etobicoke Creek). Sunny day. A little bit of rain yesterday. A few walkers, bicycles, and strollers but hardly anyone on the beaches (both Etobicoke and Mississauga sides). Young child afraid of bees told to step into the flowers so her dad could take a picture. The answer was no! Father said if you don't bother them, they won't bother you. True for bees. Wasps are another story.

Colonel Sam Smith Park by Korice Moir

Curious birds. Ducks (one walked up to our feet). Swans (two parents and youth swam up to the shore). Night herons (four in total, kept their distance on rocks in the background). Thick bright green algae on the north end. Two mammals (muskrats?) swimming through the muck left a trail. Ants, lots of ants. Sadly it is getting dark much earlier, but what a sunset!

West Deane Park South by Korice Moir

Michael B. organized 'The Creek and the Canopy' clean-up along Mimico Creek at West Deane Park South (part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up). Thanks to all who came out! New MPP for area helped collect along the trail -- very much appreciated. Volunteers from nearby high school collected the most garbage and also helped test water quality using Water Rangers kit. They were awesome! Other notes: it rained the night before; cloudy during the clean-up; and started to rain just as we were packing up. Surprised at how little garbage there was on east side of creek, walking south of the meeting spot. Have others picked up recently? Similar to other years, saw a number of golf balls in the water. We discussed recent report of blue-green algal bloom at mouth of Mimico Creek. Is the algae this far up the stream? It definitely changed how we participated in this clean-up compared to other years (this time we did not put on waders and climb into the creek like we usually do). The situation was not lost on us... the health of our creek has deteriorated such that we can't go into it to pick up garbage and improve its health! Boo.
