Kyd Brook Hawkswood Estate by Kirsty Blackman
There has been heavy rain fall which has swept a huge oak branch along the brook and collecting debris, but the water level is still low and steady. On a positive note the heavy rain has cleared a lot of the silt from the stones on the base. This site is also riverfly monitoring site, which I monitor with Brian Knight, it wasn't a very good tally again today but there are many surface water overflows (S.W.O) upstream and downstream for that matter plus a C.S.O/ combined sewer overflow quiet a way upstream from this point. Gammarus 17 R.M.I Score =2 + 5 leeches

Kyd Brook S.W.O downstream by Kirsty Blackman
There have often been pollution problems with this S.W.O, which mainly meant that there were obvious signs of laundry detergent, probably due to a misconnection. This had been reported and investigated by Thames Water(the local water authority for this area) but unfortunately nothing changed. Then on 4/7/25 the pollution took a dramatic change as it included sewage, fortunately the environment agency had a new way of reporting via their website. Thames water investigated finding that one of the surface water drains had a crack in it and one of the sewage drains had collapsed in places and somehow sewage was seeping into the surface water drain and discharging from the S.W.O into Kyd Brook. Thames water were in a residential street for several weeks repairing the drains meaning that some very understanding residents have had their back gardens excavated for the pipes to be replaced and relined in various places before moving upstream in the pipes to discover any more problems. Currently there is a temporary halt to works whilst another resident was away and will commence soon. In the meantime in another house there is a temporary bypass inplace meaning that the surface water drain is connected to the sewer drain. We are hoping that this will be resolved soon and there will be no more pollution issues with this site.

I am pleased to say that it looks like Thames water have finally resolved the pollution issues that have dogged this S.W.O since I started water monitoring. Only time will tell for sure but I have my fingers crossed.

Water levels are very low and slow moving, the base is covered in lots of silt. This site is also a riverfly monitoring site, today's results are Gammarus x 6 RMI Score = 1 Plus stickleback/fry x 1, damsel flies x 2

Kyd Brook S.W.O downstream by Kirsty Blackman
Pleased to report that there are no signs of pollution. Thames water are still in a residential road nearby where the drains had collapsed causing sewage to enter Kyd Brook. The tanker lorry has now gone but gardens have been dug up for new pipes to be fitted.
