Kyd Brook Hawkswood Estate by Kirsty Blackman
The brook was running slow and low, even though there was rain the other day the stones on the bottom were covered with silt. This site is also a Riverfly monitoring site, today's results are: 14x Gammarus 3x Olives RMI score =3 Plus 1x leech, 3x damsel large and 1x fry( baby fish)

Kyd Brook S.W.O downstream by Kirsty Blackman
Very pleased to report that there is no pollution at this site within Kyd Brook today, but there is a sewage collection vehicle at a house further upstream where the pipes run. Thames water are digging up a collapsed drain and replacing it. There will be further investigations and hopefully this will finally be resolved.

Kyd Brook C.S.O by Kirsty Blackman
As you will be aware there is a C.S.O a little upstream from this testing site. It last discharged yesterday 7/7/25 from 05:45 - 08:15 = 2hrs 30mins.

Even though there had been heavy rain the day before the bottom of the brook was still covered in silt, please see picture.

Kyd Brook S.W.O upstream by Kirsty Blackman
Near the S.W.O there is a slight smell of sewage, the water is low and slow moving, its been very dry lately with only slight rain a few days ago. The brook has natural debris within it but the water is clear. The other side of the S.W.O you can see greyish discoloured water which spread quiet a way down stream. This has been reported on the government pollution website https://www.gov.uk/report-water-pollution ref 02404106.

Kyd Brook S.W.O downstream by Kirsty Blackman
There is a known misconnection on this S.W.O which has been reported to Thames water but they have been unsuccessful in finding it. There is often pollution at this site for this reason, last week there was possible sewage fungus. This week there is a slight smell of sewage and even though it's dry the S.W.O is discharging pale grey water into Kyd Brook that is spreading downstream. The water in the brook is low and slow running due to the dry weather and has natural debris within it plus silt at the bottom. This pollution has been reported on the government pollution website https://www.gov.uk/report-water-pollution, ref 02404106. Update. I recieved an email from the environment agency asking for photos and more information. They reported it to Thames Water who sent an investigation team out on Friday night. They have found a collapsed drain and somehow this has been leaching into the surface water drain. Some unfortunate homeowners have this drain in their back gardens and it's being dug up to replace the drain, whilst another homeowner has a sewage collecting vehicle connected to the drain. Once this is done, there will be more explorations to see if the drain is collapsed further upstream, hopefully this will not be the case and it will be resolved, only time will tell.

Kyd Brook S.W.O upstream by Kirsty Blackman
Today there was a strong rotting smell with a hint of sewage and laundry detergent, it could be sewage fungus. This has been reported on the new government website for reporting water pollution in England ref - 02400689.

The phosphate hanna checker result was flashing at 2.5 so it was higher than this.

Kyd Brook S.W.O upstream by Kirsty Blackman
There is a known C.S.O upstream. The E.D.M showed that the last discharge was on the 7th June 2025 from 17:45- 20:00 = 2hrs 45mins.

There is a known C.S.O upstream. The E.D.M showed that the last discharge was on the 7th June 2025 from 17:45- 20:00 = 2hrs 45mins. Also at this monitoring site there is a S.W.O with a misconnection meaning that there is often a smell of laundry detergent and visible signs coming from the S.W.O. This has been reported but to date the misconnection has not been found.

East Kyd Brook by Kirsty Blackman
The bottom of Kyd Brook was clearer today and the stones looked clean, as normally they are covered with a layer of silt. It must have been the heavy rain on Saturday meaning that the silt is now further downstream. I've also uploaded some sheets explaining the meaning of the ammonia and phosphate levels.

Kyd Brook Hawkswood Estate by Kirsty Blackman
Even though there was a short burst of rain whilst doing our riverfly monitoring today, and there had been rain on and off in the past 24 hours the water level was still low and running slow. As one of the photos above will show the bottom and stones of Kyd Brook are covered in a thick layer of silt making it an awful habitat. This is in part due to the amount of S.W.Os that empty into the brook, which leads to flashing, (water levels rising rapidly) which inturn increases the amount of silt. There was a large oak branch and several large pieces of concrete in the stream, Brian, my fellow Riverfly monitor lifted a couple of pieces of concrete and there were some gammarus and Asellus plus 3 leeches but could not be recorded for riverfly monitoring. R.M.I results gamarrus x12 R.M.I score = 2
