Observations

  • 9 April 2017

La Passe boat launch by Cale Jackson

Weather is warm and sunny. A lot of activity down by the river. Canada Geese are present in large numbers. Mallard ducks, redwing blackbirds, robins, and even sandhill cranes are out today. The river is still low. Large ice pieces, riverbergs, are drifting past. Wading along the bank has revealed an abundance of activity. There are many Ephemeroptera (mayflies) in the water. Also small fish, minnows?, swimming in the shallow water.

Dairy Farm on Grant Settlement by Jennifer Valentine

Images of culvert located at this farm that has some suspiciously dark runoff, which seems to be coming from directly under the barns. Notice the reddish brown water flowing into the drainage ditch, approximately 500 ft from Ottawa River.

Gore Line Creek, La Passe by Jennifer Valentine

Windy, overcast, 94% humidity, 21 km/h N, 99.7 kPa, The ground, already near saturation or still frozen, has little ability to absorb further rainfall. Between 30-50mm are expected to fall within the next 24 hrs. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

La Passé Rd, La Passe, ON by Jennifer Valentine

Picture 1. Taken at six thirty six pm. Picture 2. Taken at six fourty two pm The spike in the pH should not be surprising, heavy rainfall in the past 24 hrs has increased snow melt from the surrounding beef farm. There is some construction happening on the farm, as a result a pile of building waste is located meters from the creek bank. Runoff is the suspected cause; samples collected downstream are significantly more cloudy ⛅️.

  • 5 April 2017

    Muskrat River by Jennifer Valentine

Very cloudy, almost hazy, 101.5 kpa, 71% Humidity, heavy rainfall for the past 24hrs, vegetation has just started showing signs of spring budding.

  • 3 April 2017

Pleasant Vally Rd. La Passe, ON by Cale Jackson

Performed lab analysis of samples taken 02/04/2017. Performed tests for Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Ammonia using a Hach DR3900 (TSS followed the photometric method and Ammonia was analyzed using the salicylate method). Results: TSS: 48 mg/L Ammonia: 0.3 mg/L Discussion: The results indicate that between this sample site and the sample site located 800 meters downstream there is an increase in both ammonia and TSS (a significant increase in TSS, over double the amount) as the stream flows through the farm. Ongoing monitoring and data collection will continue.

Dairy Farm on Grant Settlement by Cale Jackson

Tested sample from culvert in lab for ammonia and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Used a Hach DR3900 spectrometer to analyze the sample using method 10031 (Nitrogen,Ammonia, Salicylate method) and TSS was analyzed using method 8006 (Photometric Method). TSS: 138 mg/L Ammonia: 1.9 mg/L

La Passé Rd, La Passe, ON by Cale Jackson

Lab tests were performed on samples from 02/04/2017. The samples were analyzed for Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Ammonia. TSS was analyzed using method 8006, photometric method, and Ammonia was analyzed using method 10031 (salicylate method). Results: Ammonia: 0.5 mg/L TSS: 139 mg/L Discussion: This site is located 800 meters downstream from another site we are monitoring. The stream passes through property that is an active farm. Construction activities are currently occurring on farm and debris is located within 5m of the stream. This particular sample had double the TSS from the upstream site. There is a possibility that the construction activities have an influence on increasing runoff into the stream. Monitoring this site will continue on a regular weekly basis and after significant rain events if possible.

Waiting for the water to open up so we can go Suping for our measurements! Wind 12 km/SE, 70% humidity, 101.7 kpa, Misty cloud cover. People are itchy for spring👍🏽

Gore Line Creek, La Passe by Jennifer Valentine

The pH is really high.... and the water colour is copper. This all eventually ends up in the Ottawa River and possibly groundwater storage for wells. Wind 12km/SE 65% Humidity, 101.7kPa, sunny misty cloud cover.

  • 3 April 2017

Westmeath Boat Launch by Jennifer Valentine

Wind 12 km/SE, 65% Humidity, 101.7 kPa, misty white could cover. Expected rain over night tonight, I might possibly do another test for road salt/Sodium Chloride (NaCl) as it should be noticeable. Measuring quite high right now, same as the sample from the drainage ditch next to Algonquin College. It makes sense that levels would be off tha chart in areas such as these. Conductivity is also significantly higher, which is the measure of Total Disolved Solids(leaf bits and organic matter etc.) and Salinty(saltiness)

Drainage creek 20m from OR by Jennifer Valentine

Owl rafting putin drainage ditch area 30 m away from Ottawa River. Very mucky & foamy buildup, heavy evergreen forest surrounding creek.

  • 2 April 2017

Pleasant Vally Rd. La Passe, ON by Jennifer Valentine

The fact that our sample was cleaner before this area is a sign that this pile of construction garbage so close to the creek might not be the most ecofriendly decision. Sample #2 in the picture is Was collected here. Just around the corner is where sample #3 was collected and you can see a difference in clarity. In comparison to the other samples collected #4 is above on the same stream. The number six will not enter on the mobile version so I will write the results below to confirm the data is in and when it is fixed I will update the entry pH :Six.six Temp :six.4

Station 1 & 2 differ in clarity. Both a pale white in comparison to our two other samples from above and below this section, which eventually flows into the Ottawa River. Beautiful sunny day. Wind 15km/N, 38% Humidity. Saw 2 Sandhill cranes on my morning bike ride.

Cale conducting his water quality testing. Lots of sunshine, ice is quickly melting, he can't wait to get his kayak out so he can get some secci disc readings.
