Harris Narrows by Kim Emde
Very hot and humid day, clear skies after rain the previous night. Water looks dark, and there are aquatic plants, but the Secchi disk is clearly visible at the bottom. There is a heron pair present, and a flock of Canada Geese. Large and small fish can be seen.

Deacon Boat Launch by Kim Emde
Observations made as part of the Celebrate Our Rivers group paddle. This is also the grand opening of the new dock. The water surface appears slightly oily at the boat launch around the dock. The water is in the shade at the time of observation. No obvious aquatic vegetation. The clouds were clearing after a stormy and rainy previous night.

Mouth of creek just north of boat launch by Korice Moir
Walking east along Lake Ontario's waterfront toward Mimico Creek from my home, I came across a sign that said 'Toronto Cycling Music Festival' today at Humber Bay West Park. Had no idea. Naturally I took a detour to see what was up. Fun surprise on the waterfront. Listened to good band playing, ran into a friend, signed up to support campaign to improve bike infrastucture in Toronto. Great event! Headed back toward the creek that hugs the park, noticing again how low the water is these days. So low that an egret was fishing IN the mouth of the creek, when normally they just hang out in the shallower wetlands on the side. Also spotted a heron hunched on a log. Swan family, too. Windy, very windy. Also cold. Today for the walk over, I had to put on a toque. That signifies the first day of fall in my mind. It's only Sept 9. Too early! :)

Colonel Sam Smith Park by Korice Moir
Green! The surface of the water is green. Uncool. A number of ducks near the shoreline. No other life in and around the pond this morning... except for a kingfisher flying over. That was cool.

Humber Bay Park West by Korice Moir
On Thursday mornings, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper volunteers take five samples along Humber Bay West Park beach to test for ecoli. Photos include Ro O. conducting standardized sampling protocol using new twist packs instead of sample bottles. Also Ro and Korice using Water Rangers' testkit to test for other water quality parameters (at site 1 of 5), including a new dissolved oxygen test. After a little bit of drizzle early in the morning, the water was clear and calm. Unfortunately still some garbage washing up onto the beach, including many straws, cans, bottle caps, feminine hygiene applicators, plastic-coated copper wire, plastic bits, and a syringe. The Lake Ontario Waterkeeper test sheets include taking an inventory of the trash at a sampling site, as well as water conditions, and waterfront users (today we saw joggers, dog walkers, a kayer, and plenty of gulls).

Sample taken standing in the water off shore at the beach. Clouds and wind picking up on a hot day. I was surprised by the low hardness reading.
