Flock of 25-30 cormorants were swimming downstream prior to water testing. White pelicans are migrating through area. Black birds are roosting in cypress trees to the NE of site on marsh island. Blue Heron was roosting in cypress tree behind cormorants in flight. 0 rain for last 48 hours. 0.37" in last 7 days. Very hazy (cannot see the sun). 3mph NNW wind. Small specs in water samples after stabilizing samples and shaking repeatedly. Suspect algae blooms due to high oxygen content during the day.

Similar, but larger oil slick was visible at site two weeks ago. Salinity at surface 0.5 PPT, 18" from surface 0.5 PPT, and 6" from bottom 1.0 PPT.

Rising low tide. Salinity at surface and 6" from bottom 2.5 PPT using remote sampler. Cold front passing through. Clear skies/no clouds. North wind 4-5 mph with 15 mph gusts. No rain for past 48 hours. 0.8 inches of rain the past 7 days. No debris/plants floating in water around monitor site. 2 fishing boats about 200' to north. 2 flocks (6-8) of Canadian geese flew by during monitoring. No animal activity noted in water.

Mobile, Alabama, off of Riverside Drive by David Strain
No rain for the last 72 hours. Sunny with cumulus clouds. NE wind 3-5. Beautiful day. Eel grass floating on surface and female eel grass n adjacent areas are starting to send out spirals with seeds. Eel grass appears to have started growing in front of bulkhead at site in 24"-30" of water at low tide. Salt content: at surface- 0 PPT 18" below surface - 1PPT 6" from bottom - 1 PPT Alligator gars and redfish were observed at site during the night under light. Numerous aquatic plants are blooming on marsh islands within 500' of monitoring site. Mosquito dragonflies are often seen at site. Numerous birds frequent the immediate area: brown pelicans, terns, seagulls, black birds, osprey, blue heron, heron, and various other water birds.

Falling tide. Water green in color. Sunny with cumulus clouds. Hot & humid. SE Wind 3-5mph. Scattered eel grass floating on surface. Sago Pondweed wads almost disappeared. 0.3" rain in last 24 hrs. 0.93" of rain the last 7 days. Using a remote sampler for salinity samples: At surface - 2 ppt 18" below surface - 2 ppt 6" above bottom - 4 ppt.

Salinity at 2 PPT at surface, 18" below surface, and 6" above the bottom. Hot with cumulus clouds. S wind 5-10 mph. Sago river weed in smaller, thinner groups than a weed ago. Duckweed on top. Saw some hya Pelicans roosting in cypress trees on adjacent island. Thousand of 1" fish in river grass about 300' downstream. Numerous dragon flies around monitor site. No rain the last 3-4 days. 1.7" of rain the last 7 days. Numerous river grasses blooming in marsh areas.

Sample taken at low tide...ride rising. Fewer wads of sago pond weed in river as only a little rain the last several day. Green scum on top of some sago pondweed. Hot and muggy the last several days. South wind 2-5mph. Dragon flies are in the area. Blue birds have hatched and left area. Cardinals have hatched and hanging around the area. Wrens in the wharf house room have hatched and moved out.

Added note for 6 July 2018 observation: Jelly blob on the tree branch taken out of the water is a Bryozoan Pectinatella magnifica...tiny colonial animals that can form jelly-like masses, which are often found attached to sticks or docks. No rain for 24 hours. 1.0" rain in the last 7 days. 5-10 mph SE wind. Sunny with cumulus clouds. Outgoing tide with eelgrass and sago river grass floating on water surface. A manatee was spotted 200' downstream 2 days before the water test. 2-19" redfish caught this week. Blue heron nesting in dead cypress tree across the river on the marsh inland adjacent Point Legere. No salt content was noted at surface water, 18" below surface, or 6" above bottom of river. Cyanobacteria(?) colonies (small dots) noted in water.

Bryozoan Pectinatella magnifica found under pier at sample site. Water is warming up due to reduced rainfall this week and high temperatures (90 degrees F). 0.01" rain last 7 days. Wads of sago pond grass floating with outgoing tide. No salt (0 ppt) detected at surface or 18" below surface water with refractometer. Small numerous dots (algae?) in water.
