Even though the water levels are normally very low on this section of Kyd Brook.  The water levels do rise when there is rain due to the CSO and 3 x SWOs discharging and also the woods drain into the Brook, but it still doesnt overflow unless there is an obstruction.  To introduce Beavers, which there is only enough space for 6-8 beavers a large amount of fencing would have to be installed,  which would mean digging the woodland putting in posts and installing the fencing 4inches deep into the soil, which would disturb the natural bacteria and could also compress the soil.  We have been told that the trees can be protected but others question this. Even though there has been no public consultation, he wants to instal attenuation pools, hoping to improve water quality due to the pollution from the CSO, but the major pollution if using ammonia would be the Ember close SWO, and the beavers would be upstream from here. Phosphate levels are relatively high and could potentially lead to algea forming, this is not the case and never has been so far. He is also carrying out riverfly tests but is not carrying them out to the RMI standard.  I have quieried this via email but he hasnt replied and have been told he will not reply.\r\nHence why I am going to carry out RMI at this site, admittedly it would have been better to carry out the testing downstream at this site but it is darker and has a lot more debris and muddier. I thought that I would test my tap water today, primarily to see what the phosphate levels were as there are so many variables that affect the level. Mt tap water was ammonia 0.04, Phosphate >2.5 and flashing, I only have a low range Hanna checker. For comparison this site was ammonia 0.1\r\nPhosphate 0.62.\r\nI was relieved that the ammonia of the tap water was lower than here. Factors that affect the ammonia and phosphate here are we are in a woodland, lots of rotting/natural debris plus excess water from ghe woodland drains intk the brook, then there is a CSO plus 2 x SWOs upstream from this location. Currently there is also a fallen tree blocking the brook downstream from here which is causing it to dam and the water levels to be higher than normal, please see photos.  This has bee here a while now and has visible signs of stagnation on top of the water, it has been reported so hopefully this will be moved soon and everything can get back to The reason I am more interested in the ammonia levels is because at this site the water is within a woodland and the brook does not get a lot of sunlight due to shading from the trees, which effect phosphate levels. And there is a lot of rotting vegetation within the water.\r\nThis is what the Internet states regarding rotting vegetation.\r\nAmmonia - high levels are toxic to aquatic life\r\nRotting vegetation significantly increases both ammonia and phosphate levels in waterways.\r\nEffect on ammonia/nitrogen - decaying organic matter, including leaves releases nitrogen into the water, initially often in the form of ammonia or ammonium.  Naturally occurring bacteria in the water then converts this ammonia to nitrites and then to nitrates- the nitrogen cycle.  The decomposition process itself also consumes large amounts of dissolved oxygen, which can lead to hypoxic ( low oxygen) conditions that harm or kill fish and other aquatic animals.\r\n\r\nEffects on phosphate - as rain flows through leaves etc, phosphorus quickly leaches out, similar to a tea bag. Phosphorus can build up in the water and accumulate in the bottom sediment, where it can persist for decades.  Excess phosphate acts as a primary nutrient for algae, leading to rapid growth and algal blooms and blocking out sunlight, decaying vegetation depletes oxygen levels causing eutrophication.  In urban areas, fallen levels can contribute up to half of the annual phosphorus load in stormwater during the autumn months
