There is scum on the surface which has been there for a while now again not really moving due to slow low water There is a grey discharge in the water but no odour.  This has been reported to Thames water ref 01623765 and the environment agency ref 02487411.\r\nSince I started water monitoring 3 years ago, there has been a misconnection which has been reported. Thames water have come out but have been unable to find the source.  Last year there was a sewage entering Kyd Brook from this SWO, which I reported, Thames water came out and were in the local area digging up residents gardens as the sewage pipe was blocked and broken in several places and had somehow leached through to the surface water pipe/ I thought that I would test my tap water today, primarily to see what the phosphate levels were as there are so many variables that affect the level. My tap water was ammonia 0.04, Phosphate >2.5 and flashing, I only have a low range Hanna checker. For comparison this site was ammonia 0.25\r\nPhosphate 0.55.\r\nI was relieved that the ammonia of the tap water was lower than here. Factors that affect the ammonia and phosphate here are we are in a woodland, lots of rotting/natural debris plus excess water from the woodland drains into the brook, then there is a CSO plus 2 x SWOs upstream from this location, and this SWO.  There is scum on top of the water coming from the SWO, only time will tell if this is still a misconnection or something has been emptied down the road drain, there is lots of building works going on. Currently there is also a fallen tree blocking the brook downstream from here which is causing it to dam and the water levels to be higher than normal, please see photos.  This has bee here a while now and has visible signs of stagnation on top of the water, it has been reported so hopefully this will be moved soon and everything can get back to The C.S.O is further upstream from here near the old fever hospital site, but this site is downstream. Even though there was a discharge yesterday and there is obviously a lot of rotting vegetation due to leaves etc in the water way, the ammonia levels are not bad. The reason I am more interested in the ammonia levels is because at this site the waterway is within a woodland and the brook does not get a lot of sunlight due to shading from the trees, which can effect phosphate levels.\r\nThis is what the Internet states re rotting vegetation.\r\nAmmonia - high levels are toxic to aquatic life\r\nRotting vegetation significantly increases both ammonia and phosphate levels in waterways.\r\nEffect on ammonia/nitrogen - decaying organic matter, including leaves releases nitrogen into the water, initially often in the form of ammonia or ammonium.  Naturally occurring bacteria in the water then converts this ammonia to nitrites and then to nitrates- the nitrogen cycle.  The decomposition process itself also consumes large amounts of dissolved oxygen, which can lead to hypoxic ( low oxygen) conditions that harm or kill fish and other aquatic animals.\r\n\r\nEffects on phosphate - as rain flows through leaves etc, phosphorus quickly leaches out, similar to a tea bag. Phosphorus can build up in the water and accumulate in the bottom sediment, where it can persist for decades.  Excess phosphate acts as a primary nutrient for algae, leading to rapid growth and algal blooms and blocking out sunlight, decaying vegetation depletes oxygen levels causing eutrophication.  In urban areas, fallen levels can contribute up to half of the annual phosphorus load in stormwater during the autumn months have often been pollution problems with this S.W.O, which mainly meant that there were obvious signs of laundry detergent, probably due to a misconnection. This had been reported and investigated by Thames Water(the local water authority for this area) but unfortunately nothing changed.  \r\nThen on 4/7/25 the pollution took a dramatic change as it included sewage, fortunately the environment agency had a new way of reporting via their website.  Thames water investigated finding that one of the surface water drains had a crack in it and one of the sewage drains had collapsed in places and somehow sewage was seeping into the surface water drain and discharging from the S.W.O into Kyd Brook.  Thames water were in a residential street for several weeks repairing the drains meaning that some very understanding residents have had their back gardens excavated for the pipes to be replaced and relined in various places before moving upstream in the pipes to discover any more problems. \r\nCurrently there is a temporary halt to works whilst another resident was away and will commence soon.
