Robert Simpson Park Beach, Arnprior, Ontario by Julie Sell

I took a water sample where a small drainage creek meets the Ottawa River. It is just East of the beach area. There were plenty of chipmunks around and I could hear geese honking overhead. I saw a grackle and a robin on my way past the beach. There is a nice mix of vegetation: trees/shrubs/grasses with many trees being cedars and maples. There was a maple overhanging the water where I sampled. The bottom of the water is nice beachsand while the creek bottom is medium sized smooth rocks. It was raining this morning but is dry now. The sky is still 100% cloud cover with a pressure of 100.25kPa and 95% humidity. Barely a wind: 12km/h from the SE.

Entrance to Lemieux Island - Unofficial boat launch by Julie Sell

We could hear the honks of geese but never seen any at this location. There were also seagulls and, I believe, a hawk flew overhead. There was another small yellow bird that flew too quickly for me to see well. This seems like a good place to watch birds. The sun was getting low in the sky but there was barely any clouds. 43% humidity and winds 7km/hr from ENE

    Pembroke, ON by Julie Sell

As me and my daughter approached the bridge, a muskrat was swimming right where we ended up sampling. It is a semi-aquatic rodent and looks similar to a beaver except it has a skinny straight tail instead of a paddle. It dove and swam away before I could get a picture. Also, on our way to our sampling spot, we saw a mallard duck pair, male and female. The sun was out with no cloud cover. 101.89 kPa, WNW 18 km/hr, 20% humidity

  • 26 October 2017

    Cobden, Ontario by Julie Sell

Sunny day with low big puffy clouds Wind: 6km/hr W 101 kPa 67% humidity 153 ppm The 3 seasonal docks were just brought in. I washed my equipment thoroughly once I got home since Muskrat Lake has many zebra mussels and the veligers are microscopic and can easily cling to anything to travel. Oddly, I saw no seagulls, geese, or even a pigeon. There was a Caution sign posted for Blue Green Algae.

This spot seems to be a drainage creek for storm water. This is a great place to monitor seasonal water quality fluctuations as the levels of sodium chloride (NaCl) road salt, will be higher than normal at this time of the year. It seems to have levelled out since my initial measurements and I hope to find more benthics as the summer progresses. So far the benthics have been elusive, which would be expected from the recent measurements taken in this past month.
