Clear Creek by Rick Sowinski Maggie Jones

We had to do our testing today as we were not going to be available on our regular assigned date and time . There were no people ,animals ,birds, insects ect. The creek itself was frozen across, thus no water samples could be taken (bank to steep to navigate and break ice) We did include pictures .The lake had no ice except remnant's on shore . The water from creek did slightly breach the beach into the Lake Erie . My brother and his step son both from Taiwan helped in testing today

On the way in we saw a big hawk. It had dark spots on white feathers on its neck and breast and head. Bigger than most Red Tailed hawks we generally see in area. Wasn't the Bald Eagle unless very young still? We do have the Bald Eagles in the area since being reintroduced in late 1996 ? No ice on creek and maybe 10 metres of pack ice on shoreline Lake Erie. There was no natural debris on water no immediate discharge no evidence of using no algae water flow was steady water level still low but lots of rain and melting snow running into creek water was brown water colour was cloudy water had no odour

When we were driving in we passed a man riding a horse down road. At parking lot there was 2 horse trailers and 2 other cars which had families with the kids playing in playground behind pavillion and some coming up from lake with little pails. It was noticably warmer here than at test site #1 by 3*C . No road salt testing here as its a no winter maintenance road.

Clear Creek by Rick Sowinski Maggie Jones

*DISSOLVED OXYGEN TEST was not recorded due to me putting amploule into container with other discarded test mat'l before we had taken the reading(it was not safe enough to get another sample due to rain making shoreline slope to slippery to access again. Natural debris in water Water mostly ice covered thinly No algae Water flow was still Water level looked lower than last months testing level (banks are muddy for about 3M-5M ) Water was brown color Water was cloudy No odour With the drop in water level we could barely reach water from test location. Might have to walk around to outlet into Lake Erie if possible and walk up to creek if it hasn't breached the beach There was a juice box container on ground near creek (evidence of people) And there was 1 car in parking lot when we arrived (2 people walking )

Concerns
Through this program, citizen scientists play a vital role in collecting data for baseline water chemistry and on key contaminants, including PFAS, nutrients, and chloride (road salts) for the Lake Erie basin. By addressing critical gaps in regional water quality data, the project supports innovative pilot programs to develop and refine new monitoring methods.
Intended audience
