7 July 2020
Lake Ontario at Massassauga Point Conservation Area in PEC by Stacey Kerr
Slight breeze coming off the lake, the water is very calm. Sun very high UV and very hot weather, hardly any clouds in the sky. Swan floating about 50 metres south, likely a trumpeter swan, and a pair flew by too. LOTS of dragon flies flying overhead, many different species. Lots of songbird calls, amd a flock of cormorants flew by. Red squirrel pair are pretty territorial chirping at us as we sample. A few small boats out on the water, but they stay pretty far out. The spot is quite shallow water where I can sample safely without going into the lake, and the thermometer rests on the bedrock about 10 cm below the surface.

Parrot Riverfront Trail Above Moira Dam in Belleville by Stacey Kerr
Saw a beaver right when we arrived at the site, along with lots of dragonfiles and about 50 Canada geese floating and grazing. I heard a green frog call from a few feet away, heard redwing blackbirds from the marsh, and saw and heard chimney swifts flying above, as well as gulls. The specific sampling spot was very shallow and may not have met the 10 cm below water minimum, so I may need to do a slightly different location next time or bring a longer rope for taking water temperature samples.

Gravel base is a nice mix of fine and course gravels to the clay layer. Current is slow for this water body. Visibility is excellent. Aquatic life is abundant and active. Shoreline is protected nicely with large river rock. Little to no rapids found with such low levels.
