Observations

  • 30 August 2020

Nepahwin Park by Laura E Young

As the summer heat has dissipated, the lake feels cleaner. Clarity at depth. - about 5 feet down I can still see my legs when treading water. The geese have left the beach; only ducks remain. Washrooms and beach cleaner in terms of garbage and mess. (No test strip today - camera not working when the time came.)

Water continues to go down. Found more glass as the water gets lower. Also an aluminum boat was left at the portages and beer cans around it. We cleaned up the garbage.

Nepahwin Park by Laura E Young

Swam this morning prior to the testing. Lake cool upon entry but fine after a few minutes of swimming. You can still linger and float and chat in the pod. Air of sadness as fall starts to descend and there is no word on pools opening in Sudbury. Also, in good news, washrooms open at the Paris beach side. The change area is closed off. Garbage being dumped regularly now. Thankfully.

Hot, sunny, Dead Calm on Lake; 25 ft from shore.

  • 17 August 2020

Nepahwin Park by Laura E Young

Far too many aggressive geese - city needs to do something. Swam in another bay this morning which smelled better, was clearer - over on the Stewart Park side. Note: smell of gas and oil from the water plane was strong at its dock - yet there was NO plane. In the water smell as the pod swam by.

  • 10 August 2020

Nepahwin Park by Laura E Young

Geese are everywhere again and not moving away, regardless of how much banging or noise there is. Also, garbage on the beach, and on the grass. Sigh - lake still pretty, swimmable, but you sense there is tiredness

  • 3 August 2020

Old bridge crossing by Shaun Sellers

water incredibly high. up 1.5-2 ft from 2 days previous. water is fast moving and not clear. the water in the test cup light yellow/brown. no bird song, but crows calling. mosquitoes particularly bad. blooming: goldenrod, st john wort, joe pye weed, meadowsweet, flat top white aster, cardinal flower, virgin's bower, yarrow, purple loosestrife. fruiting: choke cherry. note: a large crayfish (4.5 inches) was seen here midweek. very exciting! note: 2 days previous a pile of human poop and paper towels used as toilet paper were found on the rock pile at the edge of the other shore. unclear as to why literally any other part of the forest would not have been a better place to properly relieve oneself. right at the water's edge?! frustrating. site is clearly not as unvisited as assumed.

  • 28 July 2020

Semicircle creek north bank by Darlene Davison

Trees have started to recover from the Gypsy moths. No garbage. Girls found a lot of frogs and 1 crawfish.

  • 28 July 2020

Portage trail near waterfall by Darlene Davison

The water has dropped significantly since our last visit. Forgot the camera to take a photo of the shore line. With more shore showing we were able to gather more of the broken glass. We found a small frog that looked almost copper and had a white stripe. Never seen a frog like that before.

    Shabomeka by Darlene Davison

We ran out of strips so we could not do that part and the wind was to strong for the visibility test. We will try and buy more strips and do the visibility test on a day the is calmer.
