Vegetation on shore
This parameter is part of the newly defined UK National Protocol as part of CaSTCo. This description is preliminary and will be updated shortly.
Bankside vegetation can tell us about the degree of naturalness of the immediate surroundings and give some indication of the resilience of the river locally. Broadly speaking bare soil and impermeable surfaces are likely to generate runoff, whereas shrubs, saplings or trees provide bank stability and some shade to keep rivers cool in summer.
