Outfall observations
This parameter is part of the newly defined UK National Protocol as part of CaSTCo. This description is preliminary and will be updated shortly.
Point sources of pollution can be damaging to rivers. In this section we are trying to identify pipes or storm flaps that have the potential to deliver pollution. There are sometimes many pipes discharging into rivers and streams – particularly in urban areas. Some of these may be harmless, conveying clean surface water to the river. Others may be permitted discharges from wastewater treatment works. Some surface water drains can become ‘misconnected’ to domestic grey water sources (especially washing machines) which might mean intermittent pollution. Take note of any visible sources in your survey area and record whether they are discharging, and whether they are causing discolouration or unpleasant odour.
Tick all that apply, so if an outfall is discharging and causing discolouration and a bad smell you would tick three boxes.
If you have site with multiple outfalls, then it may be worth conducting an Outfall Safari
*** If you suspect that an outfall is causing pollution and may be sewage; waste, spills or a leak from farms, factories, other industrial sites or objects – then you can report it to the Environment Agency online (https://www.gov.uk/report-water-pollution) or by phone: 0800 80 70 60 ***
