HM Digital COM-100 multimeter (temperature)

This parameter is part of the newly defined UK National Protocol as part of CaSTCo. This description is preliminary and will be updated shortly.

Use the HM Digital COM-100 to measure water temperature. When you have collected your sample turn on the meter by pressing the ‘ON/OFF’ button – check that the meter is in EC mode (units should read ‘µS’ (top left of display) and is measuring temperature in degrees C (bottom of display).

Remove the cap and place the meter in the sample – you only need enough sample to reach the blue electrode gasket ring. Gently swirl the meter to remove any trapped air bubbles.

Wait for the temperature reading to stabilise; that is when it has not changed for 30 seconds. NOTE – Newer meters may take up to 2 minutes to fully stabilise. It is a good idea to try and keep the meter close to ambient temperature prior to the survey i.e. not too hot (in a pocket, or on a car dashboard) or cold.

When the reading has stabilised record the result. A quick press of the ‘HOLD/MODE’ button will fix the result so that you can remove the meter from the sample to read. Another quick press will unlock the display.

The conductivity reading on the multimeter can be recorded once the temperature has stabilised.
