Dissolved organic carbon (DOC)

What is it?

Dissolved organic carbon is made up of carbon-based molecules that come from decaying plants, animals, algae, and other organic materials. These tiny molecules are small enough to stay dissolved in water after filtering out larger particles.

Why is it important?

DOC plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems. It can affect water colour, clarity, and how light moves through water. It also influences chemical reactions, such as how metals or nutrients behave, and it can provide food for bacteria. However, high DOC levels can make water treatment more difficult and may lead to harmful byproducts when disinfectants are used.

What does it mean?

DOC is a natural part of most water bodies, but changes in its levels can indicate pollution, runoff from land, or ecosystem shifts. Monitoring DOC helps track water quality, understand carbon cycling, and manage drinking water safety and environmental health.
