Coliscan Easygel

The Coliscan Easygel method is a simple way to check for E. coli in water at home. A measured amount of the water sample is mixed with a liquid growth medium called Easygel, which contains special colour indicators. The mixture is poured into a petri dish and left to solidify, then incubated at room temperature or in a warm spot for 24–48 hours. If E. coli is present, colonies grow and turn a distinctive blue-purple colour. By counting these coloured colonies, you can estimate the level of E. coli in your water sample in colony-forming units (CFU).
