    Burke Mountain Naturalists

    Variety of songbirds observed including Song sparrow, Orange-crowned warbler, Ruby-crowned kinglet, Common Yellowthroat warbler. Some waterfowl on west lagoon such as Pied-billed grebe, Mallards, Ring-necked duck and Gadwall.

    Note: recent addition of minor salt to reduce icy conditions on observation platforms may have affected local conductivity and alkalinity, Note: some difficulty encountered in interpreting color of Taylor strip for hardness. Past observations tended to have values of "0" with today's strip color leaning toward a light purple rather than blue, so estimate of 150 for hardness value, which is suspect. Moderate amount of waterfowl on lagoon, including American coots, mallards, gadwalls, American widgeons and Pied-billed grebes. Small number of songbirds including American robins, Black-capped chickadees, Dark-eyed-juncos, Spotted Towhee, and Song sparrow.

    Limited wildlife activity including waterfowl on lagoon, due to heavy rain (downpour). Observations included a few songbirds including American Robin, Song sparrow, Dark-eye junco, and Spotted towhee, as well as Hooded merganser, Canada Geese, and Mallards on lagoon.

    Relatively high turbidity levels on west lagoon continue over the fall and early winter, particularly in comparison to clear water in east lagoon. Unknown cause of this turbidity to date. Wildlife observations include a few Mallards, Bufflehead ducks, Pied-billed grebe, and Ring-necked ducks.

    West pond quite murky compared to east pond. Considerable amount of waterfowl on water including, mallards, american wigeons, ring-necked ducks, pied billed grebes, gadwalls, hooded mergansers, several Canada geese. Also heard song sparrow.

    Observed birds on and around west lagoon: mallards (35); Black-capped chickadees, Canada Geese (11), and Anna's hummingbird. Also observed a Western Painted turtle basking on a floating log at north end of west lagoon.
